Bio: Julian Varela
- Julian Varela has worked in the health and fitness industry for over 15 years for companies such as Bally Total Fitness, 24 Hour Fitness, L.A. Workout and Kennedy Club Fitness.
- While attending business school at California Lutheran University in Thousand Oaks, CA, Julian worked as an independent personal trainer. As his passion for the field grew, he changed his major to Exercise Science and Sports Medicine. During his final year, Julian obtained his credential as a Certified Strength and Conditioning Specialist through the National Strength and Conditioning Association. The Athletic Department soon hired him as their Strength and Conditioning Coach, and he trained many of the university’s top athletes. Julian’s developing passion for youth fitness prompted research into childhood obesity. Department Chair and Julian’s mentor, Dr. Bill Sands, Ph.D. (currently with the United States Olympic Committee), encouraged him to apply to the graduate program at California Polytechnic University. Julian graduated with a Master of Science degree in Kinesiology with an emphasis in Exercise Science and Health Promotion. The majority of his research focused on the study of childhood obesity and the development of community-based childhood obesity intervention program called F.I.T.
- As the Fitness Director at a local health club, Julian began to understand the need for a more comprehensive approach for helping clients achieve their health and fitness goals. From this need, Equilibrium Fitness, Inc. was created in the Fall of 2006 with fellow graduate student and co-worker Dave Pomfret. Shortly thereafter, Julian and Dave acquired the Studio Fitness for Women Inc., a local women’s fitness facility. Equilibrium Fitness, a comprehensive and integrative approach to weight loss and performance, is now offered through The Studio Fitness for Women Inc. and is the cornerstone of their fitness programming.
- Julian also worked as an Exercise Physiologist with Dr. Grant Williams of the Life Balance Centre in Santa Barbara, CA. Dr. Williams, affiliated with Dr. Diana Schwarzbein, specializes in hormone regulation, metabolism, diet and nutrition. As an industry presenter, health & fitness activist, columnist and trainer Julian is committed to inspiring the world to adopt a fitness lifestyle. “We are all about helping our clients, members and community make a commitment to themselves for a healthy, happy life,” says Varela. “We’re here to make sure they keep that promise.”
